The Advantages of Industrial PC Touch Screen DisplaysTouch screen technology is all around us. You’ll find them being used in many everyday places, such as banks, info kiosks, supermarkets and now on mobile phones. Easier to use and more compact than a keyboard and mouse, touch screens offer a variety of benefits. They can also be designed to be more durable and reliable than a conventional desktop PC, which is why they’re so widely used in manufacturing and industrial environments. Some of the advantages of industrial PC touch screens include: Save space – serving as both an input and an output, touch screens eliminate the need for peripherals (i.e. keyboard and mouse) as well as the problem of tangled up wires.1 Durable – touch screens designed for industrial environments are more robust than conventional desktops, and are able to withstand knocks, vibrations and any other collisions from heavy machinery. Hygienic – the screens are completely sealed, which means the screens are protected from dirt, oil and grease, which could cause a mouse or keyboard to malfunction. Touch screens can also be washed down throughout the day, which is essential in food or pharmaceuticals manufacturing. Keyboards, on the other hand, are notorious for collecting germs and are difficult to properly clean. Heat resistant – industrial touch screens can be used reliably and for long periods of time in hot, humid conditions, whereas conventional desktop PCs would struggle to cope. Combined with their durability, industrial PC touch screens reduce the risk of production being interrupted because of malfunctioning hardware, increasing processing times and profits as a result. Efficient – touch screens are widely used in supermarkets because they reduce the time it takes to enter information as well as reduce input errors.2 For similar reasons, touch screens in industrial environments can enable workers to perform tasks more efficiently and accurately. Reduced training time – without the need to memorise keyboard commands or which submenu to click on, touch screen applications are quick and easy to learn, which is especially helpful for workers inexperienced in using PC keyboards.3 User friendly – whether using your finger tips, a gloved hand or a soft stylus, touch screens are intuitive and respond to our natural instinct to control things by touch.4 Customisable applications – Touch screen software applications can be customised to show only the valid options for a particular process. This enables workers to quickly find the functions they need and eliminates the frustration of hunting around for the correct key or command.5 With so many advantages over a conventional mouse and keyboard, it’s unsurprising that touch screens are now used so widely in industrial environments for a variety of process control tasks. Industrial touch screens are more durable, quicker and easier to use, and enable workers to perform tasks more efficiently than a standard keyboard and mouse.
